A Queensland construction worker thought he had won a handy $5,000.
Then he looked again.
The man was left stunned after discovering his USA Mega Lotto division 3 win was actually worth a whopping $50,850!
The Queenslander had matched enough numbers to secure a division 3 prize but it was the game's Multiplier feature that helped turn his win into a much bigger payday.
From $5,000 to More Than $50,000!
When the winner first saw his result, he thought he'd won around $5,000.
It was only after taking a closer look that he realised just how significant his win was.
Every game in the USA Mega Lotto automatically receives a randomly assigned Multiplier number. The Multiplier can be 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X or 10X, and applies to all non-jackpot prizes.
The feature was introduced as part of the major Mega Millions rule changes in 2025, replacing the previous Megaplier add-on option. Instead of players having to purchase the feature separately, a Multiplier is now automatically assigned to each play and included in the ticket price.
For a division 3 win, the base prize is $10,000 USD in the US prize structure. A 5X Multiplier would therefore turn that into $50,000 USD!
For this Queensland winner, the result was a very welcome surprise.

Any prize over $10,000 is considered a major win and results in a call from The Lottery Office to inform players of the good news.

When asked what he might do with his windfall, he said he is yet to decide, although he's considering making a sensible move such as paying off his car loan or putting the money towards a house deposit.
Whatever he chooses, the win provides a welcome financial boost and when asked what the money means to him, his answer was refreshingly down-to-earth:
"It will help out at the moment and make things a bit easier for the future."
