William Post III is a prime example of the troubles that can come along with a lottery win when you can’t remain anonymous. William purchased a ticket in Pennsylvania and won a whopping AUD$21 million, spending most of the first yearly instalments of his winnings in just 2 weeks. 

His girlfriend ended up suing him, claiming that they had agreed to share the money. When she won her court claim, he wasn’t able to pay, so his lottery payouts were frozen. 

Willam was also arrested for firing a gun at a man on the street that was pestering him for some of his prize money. 

When the world knows you have won a big amount of cash, you can often have a target on your back. Friends and family can be drawn to your wealth and you can become the target for scammers. Some lottery winners have even been sued and sometimes for things they likely didn’t do!

So where can you remain anonymous?

There are now only 19 states in the USA that allow lottery winners where a winning ticket was purchased to remain anonymous to at least some degree. The states are

Arizona, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, North Dakota, Ohio, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia and Wyoming.

In 2018, a winning ticket was purchased in the state of South Carolina for the AUD$1.9 billion Mega Millions jackpot.

The lucky person who got to claim the big prize has remained completely anonymous thanks to the law around anonymity in the state where the ticket was purchased.
