$10,000 donation to help drive cancer patients to appointments

Gold Coast Hospital Foundation is a community-based charity that raises funds to support Gold Coast Health patients and their families by delivering services and projects.

The Lottery Office is supporting the Foundation’s work in relieving medical and financial hardship caused by cancer by donating $10,000 towards its Cancer Patient Transport Service.

As many people know from firsthand experience, the journey of ongoing cancer treatment is confronting, exhausting and convoluted and it does not affect the patient alone; every member of a patient’s support network is impacted by the harsh reality of cancer.

The Cancer Patient Transport Service makes approximately 6,500 journeys to hospital each year, assisting more than 1,500 cancer patients across the Gold Coast who are too ill to drive or unable to afford transport.

Each of the vehicles are operated by drivers who are trained for this service and share a personal connection with cancer; extending the support network of patients using the service.

The Lottery Office CEO Jaclyn Wood said the Cancer Patient Transport Service provides a vital service for people with cancer and their loved ones.

“The cost of attending frequent specialist appointments at the hospital is an additional financial burden for patients who may be on a reduced income and unable to pay the high prices of public transport, taxis and hospital parking,” Ms Wood said.

“The Foundation’s transport service provides an invaluable lifeline for local cancer patients needing support in getting to urgent treatment in hospital.”

The Lottery Office donates a percentage of the cost of every ticket sold to charities across the country, allowing the organisation to make a positive impact on the lives of everyday Australians.

The Lottery Office urges anyone interested in donating to visit the Gold Coast Hospital Foundation website.
