Wally Lewis Brings Heart and Hope through Gold Coast University Hospital Foundation
There are footy legends… and then there are Queensland legends.
Last week, Wally Lewis paid a much-needed visit to oncology patients at Gold Coast University Hospital in a heartfelt effort to lift spirits and share a few unforgettable moments.
As the official ambassador of The Lottery Office, Wally brought more than just his famous smile by sharing conversation, laughter and genuine connection.
A Polaroid Moment to Keep
In a digital world where everything disappears into a phone gallery, there was something beautifully nostalgic as he took Polaroid photos with patients to capture real, instant snapshots which he personally signed on the spot. For many patients’ undergoing cancer treatment, these weren’t just photos. They were tangible keepsakes. A moment of normality. A story to tell family. A reminder that even in the hardest chapters, there are still bright pages.
Seeing the joy on patients’ faces as the photo developed in their hands was a moment no one in the room will forget.
From Hospital Room to Game Day
As if a visit from “The King” wasn’t enough, Wally was joined by Jaclyn Wood, CEO of The Lottery Office and principal partner of the Gold Coast Titans who handed out complimentary tickets to upcoming Gold Coast Titans home games, giving patients and their families something exciting to look forward to.
For many, it’s more than a footy match and instead provides a chance to step outside the hospital environment, reconnect with community, and feel part of something bigger.
And that’s what rugby league has always done so well in Queensland: it brings people together.
The Power of Presence
Wally didn’t rush through the wards for a quick photo opportunity. He stayed. He chatted. He listened.
He spoke with patients about their treatments, their families, their favourite footy memories. He shared stories from his playing days and offered words of encouragement and not always as a legend of the game, but as a human being who understands resilience and adversity.
It’s easy to underestimate how powerful presence can be. But for oncology patients facing physically and emotionally exhausting journeys, moments like this matter deeply.
Later in the day, queues streamed from the cafeteria as hospital staff were eager to do a meet and greet with the legend. It was a privilege for Wally to meet the true heroes of those wards and spend some time to thank them for their work.
Community in Action
The collaboration between Wally Lewis and The Lottery Office highlights something important: community support doesn’t always have to be grand or complicated. Sometimes it’s a conversation. A signed photo. A promise of a night at the footy.
At the Gold Coast University Hospital Foundation, those simple gestures translated into smiles, laughter and a little extra strength for the road ahead.
And that’s a win far bigger than any scoreboard.
