Much-needed funds pledged to domestic violence helpline

Women’s Legal Service Queensland (WLSQ) is a specialist community legal centre providing free legal and social work help to people who live and identify as women in Queensland. WLSQ assists women with family law, child support, child protection, domestic violence and some areas of sexual assault.

WSLQ’s latest campaign ‘Speak the Truth’ features a powerful song written by a Brisbane-based survivor, with all proceeds going towards providing frontline legal services for women and children escaping domestic violence.

Speak the Truth encapsulates the outpouring of community grief, disbelief and search for answers that occurs every time a life is lost to domestic violence.

The Lottery Office has pledged $5,000 toward WLSQ’s Speak the Truth campaign.

Natalie Davidson WLSQ Fundraising Manager said the State-wide Helpline received 40 per cent more calls during COVID-19 lockdowns compared to June 2019.

“Unfortunately, we have had an unprecedented increase in calls for help as women and their children have had to isolate in unsafe homes,” Ms Davidson.

“The funds from The Lottery Office are going to make a real difference to the lives of women and children escaping domestic violence.”

The Lottery Office CEO Jaclyn Wood said the resulting economic disadvantages caused by COVID-19 has created even more barriers to leaving unsafe households.

“It has been disturbing to learn about the increase in calls during Queensland’s lockdowns and to consider the unknown number of people unable to call due to extended time with their abuser,” Ms Wood said.

“We are proud to be able to contribute to such a great cause and admire the great work WLSQ is doing.”

The Lottery Office urges anyone interested in donating to visit the Speak the Truth website and download the song.
